This will be a career-defining collision for Smith to face Canelo and the opportunity to avenge brother Liam’s previous loss to the four-weight ruler.
For Billy Joe Saunders, it could be a bitter disappointment. A switch from Warren to Hearn won’t have worked if he doesn’t get a big fight in 2020.
Canelo Alvarez has development a calculated and powerful style in his past few bouts. Preserving his energy and waiting for that right KO moment. His body shots could be an issue for the taller boxer Smith.
Smith certainly has the boxing and athletic ability to give Canelo a strong challange. However, given his controversial win over John Ryder back in November 2019 this type of performance won’t garner a win over Canelo Alvarez.
Fighting to the level of your opponents is a real issue, perhaps Smith can rise to the occasion? We seen that with Tyson Fury, where he underperformed in his two bouts in-between the Wilder rematch.
Expect another patient Canelo Alvarez to stalk Smith and look for the knockout.
Is Callum Smith a bad match-up for Canelo Alvarez?
In a recent interview, Callum Smith had this to say:
“If it is me, I would be happy. If not, I’m in a good division, there’s a lot of big fights out there for me, outside ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, so I’m in a good position. It’s just sitting and waiting and hopefully we can get one of the big names sorted.
”Styles make fights. I think I’m a bit of a bad fight for him. I’m 6ft 3in, I’m a lot bigger than him, I can punch. Style-wise, I’m not ideal to fight, but I’m not taking anything away from ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, he’s a special fighter and he’s one of the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world for a reason.”
Smith might be underestimating Canelo, but that’s the confidence that’s needed to beat an elite champion. Let’s hope this fight is fully confirmed soon so we get a great fight for Cinco De Mayo weekend!
