Canelo’s Recent Activity
Canelo is the current WBO light heavyweight champion, after scoring a 11th round knockout over former three-time champ Sergey Kovalev this past November in Las Vegas. The Mexican champion is also the recognized World middleweight champion, although at some point he will have to give up a belt to fight Saunders at 168 pounds.
Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel, president of the WBO had this to say: “Billy Joe Saunders just fought. He must make his mandatory for his next fight… We gave a lot of breaks to Billy Joe Saunders. When is he going to fight next? We allowed him a voluntary.”
Canelo’s Hit List
According to Alvarez’s longtime trainer has revealed the four names on their shortlist for the Mexican’s next fight. He told FightHype: “Our plans are to fight at 160 and 168. There are a lot of names.”
“The Golovkin trilogy, Callum Smith, John Ryder, Billy Joe Saunders.”
“We have five months until the date we have in May for when Canelo always fights in. There’s plenty of time for Canelo to go back down to 160 or 168. That’s not a problem for us. Right now, we’re going to give it to DAZN to see what’s available to us out there.”
Saunders Time to Shine
Saunders who is undefeated (28-0), has been given many breaks in his boxing career. That’s not to say he hasn’t fought tough competition with the likes of David Lemieux and Chris Eubank Jr. on his resume. Now it’s time for the British champ to ramp it up and potentially cause Canelo some difficulty with his movement and defensive footwork.
We are expecting this fight be officially announced in the coming weeks, with the bout taking place in the first half 2020. It’s expected to be a huge fight for fans both sides of the pond.
