Betting on Valdez vs Stevenson
Shakur Stevenson is clearly one of the hottest boxers in the world right now. Out of any of the younger generation, he is the frontrunner to be the next Floyd Mayweather. The New Jersey native earned silver at the 2016 Olympics and turned pro the following year.
With a record of 17-0 and 9 KO’s under his belt, Stevenson has shown the maturity to fight smart and also get his opponents out of the fight when the right moment presents itself.
In terms of Stevenson’s boxing odds history, the featherweight champ is used to being a sizeable betting favorite for the majority of his career. In his last bout to Herring, he opened at -350 and closed anywhere from -700 to -1300 depending on which online sportsbook you bet with. His current odds of -275 could drift as wide as -500 come fight night given Stevenson’s popularity.
Valdez is coming into the fight after much speculation over his controversial 12 round decision win over 2016 Olympic gold medalist Robson Conceição on September 10, 2021. This indecisive win, will either fuel Valdez or leave doubt in the mind of the WBC champ, which isn’t a good place to be when facing Shakur Stevenson. There is also the ‘adverse finding’ found in Oscar’s drug test leading up to the fight, which does cast a darker shadow over the Mexican.
“Just everyone who has been around supporting me during these tough times because it has been difficult. They had my back, and we know we did nothing wrong. We’re going to be real concentrated for this fight.” – Oscar Valdez.
Historically Valdez has had a similar fate with the oddsmakers for the most part of his boxing career. The most recent narrowest betting line was against Scott Quigg in 2018, where Valdez was -350 and won by decision.
This fight checks the boxes for Stevenson, who is tall for the weight class, and he likely won’t be able to make 130 pounds through 2023. The fight for Stevenson makes sense, but not as much for Valdez.
This is most likely Valdez’s limit subsequent to reaching his weight limit. Valdez won’t be expected to reach a weight higher than 135 pounds’ worth because he would be too small to fight Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and George W. Kambosos.
