Seven major sportsbook companies in America have established a trade group focused on addressing problem gambling. The group, called the Responsible Online Gaming Association (ROGA), was introduced in a news release on Wednesday (March 27).
ROGA’s primary goal is to promote best practices within the gambling industry. Its founding members include BetMGM, bet365, DraftKings, Fanatics Betting and Gaming, FanDuel, Hard Rock Digital, and PENN Entertainment, collectively representing 85% of the market. These companies have committed $20 million to support ROGA’s initiatives, as stated in the release.
Amid a surge in sports betting across the United States, with 38 states and the District of Columbia allowing residents to wager on professional sports, the launch of the Responsible Online Gaming Association (ROGA) is significant.
The popularity of events like the Super Bowl has led to record numbers in betting, prompting companies like DraftKings and BetMGM to announce expansion plans. DraftKings forecasts that online gaming will grow into a $30 billion industry by 2028.
This growth has also brought attention to the issue of gambling addiction, with an estimated 2.5 million American adults classified as severe problem gamblers by the National Council on Problem Gambling.
In recent weeks have seen scandals in professional sports related to betting, such as the case involving Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani, his interpreter, and an illegal bookie in a $4 million betting incident (Ohtani has denied involvement in sports wagering).
The fundamental query at hand is whether operators genuinely prioritize addressing gambling addiction. With the proliferation of bonuses and the constant advancement of AI and technology, sports betting now offers more enticing avenues than ever to entice new users. It will be intriguing to observe the stance taken by anti-gambling commissions regarding the Responsible Online Gambling Act (ROGA) as 2024 progresses.
