- The two heavyweight fighters trained under head coach Fernand Lopez at the MMA Factory.
Ciryl Gane defeated Derick Lewis at UFC 265 to win the interim-UFC heavyweight title. The undefeated Frenchman now becomes the heavyweight kingpin Francis Ngannou’s next contender. The unified heavyweight championship is likely to be contested later this year. We review the opening betting odds for Ngannou vs Gane below.
Francis Ngannou vs Ciryl Gane Odds
The opening odds heavily favored Ngannou after Gane won at UFC 265. However, within the matter of hours the betting line became much closer, expect this to be a pick ’em closer to fight night. Currently, Ngannou is a -130 favorite (Bet $130, win $100). The new interim champ Gane has almost even odds of -110 (Bet $110, win $100). Betting Value on Gane against Ngannou
Ciryl Gane poses a real threat to “The Predator”. He’s breezed through his opponents during his title run. Displaying a well-rounded skill set and has the most technical striking of any heavyweight we’ve seen. On the other side, Ngannou has improved leaps and bounds over his past few UFC fights and has killer KO power that could end the fight at any second.
Gane fought smart and effectively against Lewis and made the “Black Beast” look amateur at times. Evading the power shots with ease and using targeting Lewis’s leg to eventually pounce and finish him. The finish was uncharacteristic of Gane’s previous fights and a similar approach could be detrimental against Ngannou as Stipe learned the hard way at UFC 260.
Gane opened as a big underdog, +165 on some online sportsbooks. With early public money going on “Bon Gamin”, now the odds have fizzled down to +110. The current odds are more realistic of the outcome of this fight. I would give the edge to Gane but Ngannou’s power is the real deal in the early rounds.
Former Training Partners at MMA Factory
Ngannou and Ciryl trained with each other a few times during their time together at MMA Factory. Everything was going well as Francis worked his way to the top with head coach Fernand Lopez. However, things turned south after The Predator lost his fight against Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight title at UFC 220. Consequently, Francis and Lopez had a fallout which resulted in Ngannou leaving the MMA factory.
The fact that Ngannou got into MMA in France before emigrating to the US and Gane is a legit Frenchman, gives the UFC a perfect chance here to set up this heavyweight unification clash in France. In the post-fight press conference UFC president said: “Vince McMahon couldn’t have scripted Francis Ngannou vs. Ciryl Gane better”. A true statement as this future heavyweight clash will do massive PPV sales and sell itself.
