Jared Cannonier vs Sean Strickland Prediction
Both fighters will be eager to go out and make a statement here at UFC Vegas 66. Strickland suffered his first UFC loss since 2018, with his first-round KO defeat to Pereira at UFC 276. Prior to that Stickland picked up a split decision win over Sweedens own Jack Hermansson and Uriah Hall.
Jared Cannonier is now 38 years old and the window is starting to close for the former title challenger to get one more crack. Before losing his last fight to Israel Adeysaya, Cannonier scored two big back-to-back wins over Kelvin Gastelum and Derek Brunson.
In terms of UFC fight stats for this 185-pound bout, Cannonier will have a 1-inch reach advantage over Strickland. Significant strikes landed per minute are highly in favor of Strickland at 5.54 compared to Cannonier’s 3.73.
Cannonier makes more use of his striking accuracy with 11% higher accuracy than Strickland. This fight isn’t expected to go to the ground, but if it does Strickland has the better takedown accuracy ad lands more takedowns per 15 minutes on average.
The difference between Cannonier and Strickland is Cannonier has real finishing power. That being said, the Killa Gorilla can be hesitant sometimes and waits for the perfect shot instead of setting up shots.
Strickland, on the other hand, strikes in volumes as mentioned above – and there is a real possibility here that he smoother Cannonier’s style. That for me is why the online sportsbooks are giving him a slight edge. I see Cannonier’s patience and defense being key here against Strickland, knowing how Pereira waited for his moment- Cannonier can do the same and lull Strickland and rock him and rush in with a flurry of combos to finish him.
Betting Pick: Cannonier by TKO.
Strickland Eager to Get Another Shot at Pereira
Sean Strickland was the last opponent Alex Pereira defeated before he got a title shot against Israel Adesanya. While Strickland respects Pereira’s power he is not backing to down to another crack at the new middleweight champ.
“The guy f*cking hits hard, dude,” Strickland told MMA Junkie. “That motherf*cker, he has dynamite in his hands but got to get a couple wins under my belt, and hopefully he’s still the champ and we’ll run it back. I’ll give you guys a pointer: You stand in front of that motherf*cker and bang, somebody is going to sleep and it’s most likely going to be you. If I fight the guy again, I’d do the same f*cking thing. Just put this (right) hand a little more (up).”
