Betting Value on Burns
Gilbert Burns opened as a -155 favorite, within a day bettors had pounced on the opposite line Wonderboy. Thus shifting Burns from an early favorite to become a current underdog at +155.
The expectation was high for Burns taking on Usman at UFC 258 earlier this year. However, the night got to Burns who seemed to burn off some nervous energy in the first round and looked drained by the start of the second round. This defeat broke a six-fight streak for “Durinho” and put a hold on Burns’ meteoric rise in the 170-pound division.
This is a fantastic opportunity for Burns to get back in the title contention picture. Although he will have difficulty with Thompson’s striking, where Burns will look to counter with his one-punch KO power and utilize some wrestling and submission. That all being said, as an underdog Burns offers serious value to upset the odds at UFC 264.
Wonderboy’s Second Title Run
Thompson has been fighting tooth and nail to obtain title contention status since his back-to-back losses to Darren Till and Anthony Pettis in 2018-19. It won’t be a surprise to many that “Wonderboy” is the current favorite to defeat Burns, historically fans have always favored the elite striker even over Woodley and basically every fight since, win or lose.
At 38, “Wonderboy” is a true veteran in the welterweight division. He rebounded nicely to capture wins over rising contenders Vicente Luque and Geoff Neal. Realistically it would take something special to capture the eyes of the UFC and champ Kamaru Usman to justify a title shot. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if “Wonderboy” finishes Burns and faces the winner of Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261. The odds on Usman vs Masvidal 2 are covered here.
