Does the UFC Want Another Russian UFC Champion?
Petr Yan is easily one of the most dominant fighters in the lower weight classes. With wins over John Dodson, Jimmie Rivera and most recently Uriajh Faber, Yan is expected to be on the heels of a title shot.
In a recent appearance on Eurobash Podcast. Yan criticized the UFC for their immediate title shot for Dominick Cruz at UFC 249.
“To be honest, moments like this in UFC kind of upset me,” Yan said “He didn’t fight for three years and now he’s getting a title shot? It kind of upsets me and it’s a big hit for UFC reputation, in my opinion”
With fellow Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov only fighting once a year due to ramadan and the current pandemic limiting travel. It certainly puts it into perspective the advantage of being a US based fighter.
The UFC in 2020 does not follow the ranking system and prefers money fights. It’s easy to see how Petr Yan is starting to see why they would only want one Russian champion at a time.
