Devin Haney vs Vasiliy Lomachenko Prediction
Devin Haney traveled to Australia twice in 2022 to take on George Kambosos Jr. After taking Kambosos titles in the first encounter, “The Dream” returned again and defended them – beating the Auzzie a second time on home soil. 2023 is set to be his homecoming party, with a fight against Ukrainian great Lomachenko in Las Vegas, Nevada.
For the best part of a decade, Lomachenko remained a pound-for-pound great. it wasn’t until that infamous night on October 17, 2020, that he lost his lightweight titles to Teófimo López. Since then Loma has bounced back with three straight wins over Masayoshi Nakatani, Richard Comey, and Jamaine Ortiz.
Haney vs Lomachenko for the undisputed lightweight crown is the biggest fight of 2023. One of the reasons this fight is significant is Lomachenko’S greatness and skills that we have witnessed over the past decade. His ability to pivot and create angles in the ring has been unparalleled by his rivals.
Then on the flip side, you have Haney, who has an impressive journey yet still hasn’t won the media and fans over completely but boxing purists respect his craft. He’s undefeated (29-0) and still only 24 years of age, with sublime movement and slick boxing defense.
I expect this fight to be as technical as it comes in boxing. In order for Lomachenko to win this fight, I think he may have to take bigger risks than Haney. For any fighter to take chances against Haney and fight more aggressively, it always falls into his hands. Haney will have to watch Loma’s power that is underrated, a knockdown or two could be enough to sway the judge’s scorecards – if he goes the distance.
At this point in his career, I see Loma struggling to find a way to get at Haney. Haney’s precision and patience pay off as he starts to clock rounds over Loma. This fight will still be close and my early money is on Haney edging out a close decision over Loma.
Betting Pick: Haney by Decision.
Bob Arum Confident On Haney vs Loma for 2023
Even at 92 years of age Bob Arum is still making the biggest fights in boxing.
Arum has told talkSPORT the fight will be going ahead in 2023 and that both men have committed to the bout. “That fight’s going to happen,” Arum said.
“I don’t have the date yet, but I had lunch [on Monday] with Bill Haney, Devin’s father, and then Devin joined us.
“They’re great people and we discussed the fight and they’re all set a ready.
“So, we’ll have a site and date set shortly, but both Haney and Lomachenko have committed to the fight.”
