AJ remains the online sportsbooks heavy favorite since the odds were released. At -1100, you would have to bet $1100 to net $100. Pulev as a +650 underdog, means you can bet $100 to win $650.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Anthony Joshua as a heavy favorite. It was only two fights ago, that he was a -2000 favorite against Andy Ruiz, who shocked the world and defeated AJ in their first fight.
Prediction
Kubrat Pulev is a deserved opponent to challange for the AJ’s heavyweight titles. With only one loss on his record, to Wladimir Klitschko dating back to 2014. Pulev has went on a nine-win fight streak since then. Picking up wins over Derek Chisora, Hughie Fury and most recently Rydell Booker in November 2019.
In terms of what Pulev brings to the table, it’s not much different than what AJ has seen before. He’s used to facing stoic European boxers, it’s usually a game of chess until just after half ways in the fight.
“This is going to be a mind game and a chess game for as long as it lasts — a master chess game — but the only difference is the end is going to come like lightning.
“I can tell the fans that I will expose AJ again and prove they have been idolising the wrong guy. I will expose him to the world for a second time.” – Pulev in a recent interview.
AJ will have to be on his A-game against Pulev. Granted he has the better boxing IQ, as proven in his most recent rematch against Andy Ruiz Jr, we might see him bring some of this new style into the Kubrat fight. AJ furthered is reasons for a new methodical approach for this fight saying, “Pulev is a lot taller and slimmer and so will require different strategy and tactics.”
I expect to see a refined AJ that will get the tempo going from the fourth round onwards and put on an impressive display, in a more competitive match than the oddsmakers suggest.
