Originally Errol Spence was supposed to have a super fight with Manny Pacquiao last summer. However, due to an eye injury the Cuban boxer Ugas stepped in as a replacement for Spence to fight Manny. Ugas managed to claim the WBA belt thus this match-up makes a tone of sense.
Spence (27-0, 21 KO) is one of the current top P4P boxers in the world right now. While is activity has dwindled since his single-car accident, he’s still remained as relevant as always. Spence has been a consistent betting favorite, it makes sense given him undefeated record.
Spences’ past few fights saw him score a UD win over Danny Garcia in December 2020. 2021, was an inactive year for Spence which could factor into Ugas’ gameplan in turning up the heat early in this fight.
Errol’s game usually revolves around the jab, followed up by more diverse striking than your typical boxer, such as a double-cross and double jab-back hand hook. The majority of Spence’s opponents have been relatively flat-footed and this applies to Ugas also.
Ugas is similar to Danny Garcia in how he is a counter puncher and waits for openings. Although I would give Ugas the edge over Garcia, as the better counter puncher. I don’t expect Ugas to KO or knockdown Spence, but he will be a threat with his counter punches from an open guard.
On first glance, this seems like a more competitive match-up than the odds might suggest, especially given Ugas’s last win over Pacquiao.
