“Chaos” Covington opened as a -190 favorite depending on your preference. Since then early public money on UFC 272 odds has been wagered on Donald Trump’s favorite UFC fighter placing him as a -330 favorite.
Masvidal has always been the real dog when it comes to UFC odds. He was an underdog during his resurrection run where he finished Ben Asken and Darren Till. Then opened as a pick em’ against Nate Diaz, which was another clinical performance and win from “Gamebred”.
Since then, Covington and Masvidal are both coming off their second losses to the current welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. While both of Covington’s bouts against Usman were close, in particular the second one. Masvidal lost by a brutal kO in his rematch against Usman.
It’s clear to see Covington why is highly favored here. His striking and well-roundness has improved immensely since leaving ATT. He’s got a solid wrestling base that caused Masvidal huge problems against Usman in their first bout. That being said, there is no denying Masvidal’s explosiveness on the feet and it’s worth checking out the betting props for Masvidal by KO once they are released.
Former Training Partners at ATT
From the early days of their UFC run and friendship, Covington and Masvidal were once living together. It all started at American Top Team (ATT). However, over the past few years, things have gone downhill between the two. Ever since then, the former training partners have been publicly feuding with each other.
Both now represent their separate identities and gyms. Masvidal’s stock skyrocketed in 2019, while 2020 and 2021 represented a decline in performance and public appeal. Covington on the other hand has been a slow burn for UFC fans. From a whacky MAGA character to a well-respected and genuinely funny troll, he’s turned babyface on the UFC and this is undoubtedly one of the best UFC matchups the division can offer right now.
