Rafael Dos Anjos is now scheduled to fight against Renato Moicano at UFC 272, after Rafael Fiziev had to withdraw due to COVID. Islam Makhachev threw his name in the hat to fight for a second week in a row, but that didn’t transpire and now Moicano has stepped up to fight RDA.

UFC 272 Prediction: RDA vs Moicano
Renato Moicano is stepping up on short notice to fight Rafael dos Anjos at a catchweight of 160-pounds. The plus side of this for Moicano is that he fought only a few weeks ago. Moicano defeated Alexander Hernandez by second-round submission and he looked better than ever at 155 pounds.
Moicano’s UFC run has had its ups and downs, he does hold notable wins over Zubaira Tukhugov and Calvin Kattar. His losses come from top contenders such as Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega, The Korean Zombie, and Fiziev. Moicano has excellent BJJ with technical striking and great wrestling. His one major weakness would be his chin and the fact that he’s taking this fight on short notice.
After losing 4 of his preceding 5 fights former UFC lightweight champion dos Anjos returned to his home country and defeated short-notice replacement Paul Felder at UFC fight at Fight Night 182 in November of 2020. He’s also is in a similar spot where his last losses come from the elite at 170 pounds, from Usman, Covington, and Leon Edwards.
Dos Anjos has not lost a fight in six years where he was not taken down in the process. This will be key for Moicano to integrate some grappling and try to get dos Anjos to the ground. When it comes to takedown defense, Moicano has an impressive 80% defense, and dos Anjos has 58% with a 37% takedown accuracy. Both fighters tend to let their guards down in fights too, with RDA absorbing 3.22 and Moicano 3.58 strikes absorbed per minute.
I see Moicano having more success with his striking compared to RDA too, he fights with a Muay Thai style and lands 5.12 significant strikes per minute compared to RAD at 3,40. Over the course of five rounds, this volume could really take its toll on dos Anjos.
If you are looking for a betting underdog at UFC 272, then Moicano to win against dos Anjos is the betting pick of the night.
