- Devin Haney is a firm betting favorite -1100 to Jorge Linares at +900.
- A win for Haney here will secure more credibility for the promising young boxer.
- My prediction is Haney can win this by late stoppage or on points.
Devin Haney is set to take on the old guard Jorge Linares this Saturday, May 29. This will be Haney’s biggest step in his boxing career and he is massively favored. We preview this fight for the WBC title with a fight prediction on how I expect this fight to play out. You can check out the latest Haney vs Diaz odds, with “The Dream” opening as a firm favorite.
Haney vs Linares Prediction
This fight can certainly be looked at as the passing of the torch from Linares to Haney. It will be Linares’ 53rd professional bout, and while his career is in his twilight years he still packs a serious punch and can hang in there with the veterans of the sport and challenge new up and comers like Haney.
Linares (47-5), with his five losses coming to the elite of boxing. Including one of the biggest names in boxing Vasyl Lomachenko in 2018. Then a shocking first-round TKO loss to Pablo César Cano for WBC Silver international super lightweight title the following year. Linares then managed to bounce back with wins over Al Toyogon and Carlos Morales in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
Linares opened as a -700 favorite a few weeks back. The Venezuelan pro is now averaging around +900 and I expect that to be pushed towards +1000 and beyond come fight night.
“I am expecting a firefight and I can’t wait,” said Haney. “We don’t know what Jorge will turn up, but I am ready for anything, and I can’t wait to show it.
“Jorge brings so much to the table. Speed, power, ring IQ, experience against the best of the best, and I think he’s the type of opponent that will bring the best out of me, make me bring out my A-game, take it to the next level, the elite level.
“People think he will have success, some think he will even win the fight, and that’s why it will show that I am elite and one of the best, if not the best, in the world.”
That all being said this should be a perfect test Haney, one that should be an indicator of how he’ll hang in there with the upper echelon of the division such as Teofimo Lopez. If Haney does get past Linares, I think a fight against Ryan Garcia would make sense to build on what we will see on Saturday night.
One of the major advantages that Haney will look to utilize is his precise timing. Looking to time his opponents and come forward with a straight one and overhand right. Another way I see Haney attack Linares is when countering the jab – while returning a leaping hook that could catch Linares.
Linares has an aggressive style where he will try and walk down Haney. I can definitely see that being a problem for Haney in the early rounds until he gets his timing down and possibly earning some respect from Linares. Haney has 15 KO’s out of his 25 fights.
The majority of these finishes coming earlier in his young career. He isn’t known as the greatest finisher but that can change as his style develops. I can certainly see a finish on the cards here given Linares’ style where he prefers to meet in the center and Haney can set up a sequence to score a knockdown or finish him.
Pick: Devin Haney
Best Round Betting & Method of Victory Bets
Betting on the straight Moneyline on Haney offers little reward for any bets less than $1000. Therefore it’s worthwhile checking out the betting props on where the best value lyes. Below are some of my favorite outcomes of Haney vs Linares.
Haney by Decision
“The Dream” wins 40% of his fights via decision. This fight could go either way in terms of going the distance or Haney scoring a late stoppage.
Haney Rounds 8-10
We have seen Linares take some serious punishment in fights and keep going. For that reason I expect this fight to go well into the later rounds with both sides having their moments. Momentum will build with Haney being 13 years younger as the rounds go on, and rounds eight onwards could be decisive for scoring a finish over Linares.
Linares by Decision
Similar to Haney, Linares’ had more success with finishing his opponents earlier in his career. This fight could be the make or break for Haney at the highest level and over the course of twelve rounds, betting on Linares to win by decision would be incredibly lucrative.
